OUR FOUNDRESS

In 2001, Joyce E. Torchinsky founded Torchinsky Hebrew Funeral Home, where she is the Sole Owner and Managing Funeral Director.  She is a native Washingtonian, and her family has had roots in the Washington Metropolitan Area for over 100 years.  Joyce has worked in Funeral Service since 1991.  After earning her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Maryland, College Park, Joyce returned to school and completed her Mortuary Science education at the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC), MD, Catonsville Campus, formerly known as Catonsville Community College. Immediately following, she earned her Master of Science in Education from the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD.  Beginning as an Assistant Professor, she instructed Mortuary Science classes for twelve years.  Her last teaching post was as the Director of the Mortuary Science Program at CCBC Catonsville.  She taught Chemistry, Anatomy, Small Business Management and Thanatology.  She is fully licensed in Funeral Service in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia, and is also a Continuing Education Provider.  Joyce is a past President of KAVOD: The Independent Jewish Funeral Chapels, a national group of elite Jewish funeral chapels with members by invitation only. She is also on the board of directors of the Maryland State Funeral Directors Association. She currently serves as the Washington, DC, Policy Board Representative for the National Funeral Directors Association. 

Joyce has made educational presentations to groups from preschool age to adult.  She has also provided tours to groups that have visited Torchinsky Hebrew Funeral Home.
